On July 16, 1969, at 9:32 a.m., a huge Saturn V launch vehicle was launched from Cape Canaveral to send man on his most important journey in history. The Apollo spacecraft that took the astronauts to the moon consists of two parts, a command cabin and a service module. The command cabin contained space for the crew and a cockpit for 3 astronauts. Oxygen and energy were then supplied by the service module, which also contained the main power unit. Just a few minutes before entering the Earth's atmosphere, the command cabin separated from the service module, and then returned to Earth and landed safely in the Pacific Ocean suspended on parachutes.
